The Greater Toronto Area experienced record-breaking rainfall over the weekend, with Environment Canada reporting about 100 mm of rain on Saturday and Sunday, causing significant flooding across Mississauga.
Rainfall varied widely, with some areas receiving up to 170 mm and others as little as 6.2 mm, according to the city.
Numerous vehicles were stranded due to the floods, and emergency crews assisted dozens of drivers and residents. Online videos show firefighters engaged in one such rescue on Dundas Street near Blundell Road, battling against the strong currents.
The video shared by WeatherNation on social media captures firefighters working to rescue individuals from the floodwaters.
On Sunday, several roads were closed because of the flooding, and the Highway 403 eastbound ramp to Highway 410 northbound in Mississauga was shut down for repairs on Monday morning due to storm damage.
Over the weekend, there were 27 water rescues and eight elevator rescues due to water and power surges.
This year, Mississauga allocated $33.7 million for stormwater improvements, focusing on projects along Cooksville Creek, Etobicoke Creek, and erosion control measures.
Since 2016, the city has invested over $231.5 million in stormwater infrastructure.
