Police apprehended a driver on Tuesday who was caught traveling at more than twice the speed limit near a plaza in Mississauga’s west end, an area well known for frequent illegal and dangerous driving.
According to Peel Regional Police, the driver was recorded going 122 km/h in a 50 km/h zone on Eglinton Avenue West near Ridgeway Plaza. The individual has been charged with stunt driving and speeding, resulting in a 30-day licence suspension and a 14-day vehicle impoundment.
In Ontario, stunt driving is defined as:
Driving 50 km/h or more over the speed limit in zones where the limit is above 80 km/h
Driving 40 km/h or more over in zones with limits of 80 km/h or less
Driving at 150 km/h or more on any roadway
A few weeks earlier, police also charged a driver with stunt driving for allegedly going 101 km/h in a 50 km/h zone on Ridgeway Drive near Eglinton Avenue West—close to the same plaza.
Since Ridgeway Plaza opened in 2022, police have increased enforcement in the area due to the growing issues of stunt driving, speeding, and street racing. Late-night gatherings and traffic-related complaints have been on the rise.
During enforcement blitzes in August and September 2024, officers issued 530 charges in and around the west-end plaza, including offences for stunt driving, speeding, excessive muffler noise, and illegal window tinting.
