In the coming days and weeks, four lanes on the QEW in Mississauga, along with on- and off-ramps, will be closed as work continues on the rehabilitation of the highway bridge over the Credit River.
According to the latest email update from project leaders, the QEW westbound off-ramp to Mississauga Road will be fully closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. for four consecutive nights, including this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, as well as next Monday.
Additionally, the westbound on-ramp from Mississauga Road to the QEW will be closed from midnight to 5 a.m. on Saturday night into Sunday morning.
For the next two weeks, four lanes on a busy section of the QEW in Mississauga will be closed nightly and overnight. The closures, managed by the QEW/Credit River Improvement Project, will occur between Erin Mills Parkway and Hurontario Street from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. until April 14.
Project leaders have warned that traffic disruptions are expected during these lane closures, and overnight construction work may generate noise. The closures are weather-dependent and could be rescheduled if necessary.
In addition, traffic disruptions will continue along a nearby busy road, Premium Way, throughout April. One lane on Premium Way will be closed weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. until April 30, excluding Good Friday and Easter Monday (April 18 and 21). This restriction was also in place throughout March.
The closure on Premium Way will affect traffic between Stavebank Road and Lynchmere Avenue. Drivers and area residents should expect disruptions until the work is completed. Premium Way runs parallel to the QEW, just west of Hurontario Street.
Despite the closure, two-way traffic will be maintained under flagging conditions, and access to Dickson Road and Lynchmere Avenue will remain open.
Lane closures and traffic restrictions have been ongoing since 2022 due to the large-scale bridge project, which began three years ago. The project does not have a specific completion date yet.
Further traffic disruptions are expected as construction continues in the coming months. Night, overnight, and weekend work along the QEW from Hurontario Street to Erin Mills Parkway will continue to affect traffic throughout the project.
As part of the $313.8-million project, led by EllisDon Corp. and Coco Paving Inc., ongoing work includes:
Construction of the Mississauga Road multi-use path
Rehabilitation of the existing bridge
Upgrades to the Mississauga Road interchange
Pedestrian-cyclist crossings over the QEW
Improvements to the QEW median
The contract for the project was awarded to EllisDon Corp. and Coco Paving Inc. in late 2020, and work began in 2021/22.
Initially studied by Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation in 2013, the project originally called for the demolition of the 840-foot-long bridge, built in 1934 and expanded in 1960. However, following public opposition and Mississauga city council’s strong objections in late 2019, the provincial government decided to rehabilitate the existing bridge instead.
The province explained that based on public feedback after the demolition plan was announced, it chose to preserve the heritage structure of the bridge, which is owned by the Ontario government.
