Red light and speed camera tickets will once again be issued in Mississauga, but some drivers may avoid penalties due to the recent Canada Post strike.
During the month-long strike, tickets couldn’t be mailed out, as the postal service is the sole method for notifying vehicle owners of infractions. While the cameras continued to capture violations, no tickets were sent due to the lack of mail delivery.
City spokesperson Irene McCutcheon explained that under provincial regulations, tickets must be issued within 23 days of the offense. As a result, once the strike ends, only violations that occurred within the last 23 days will be mailed out. Violations older than 23 days, which were captured before the strike began on November 15, will not result in tickets being issued.
With the strike now over, mail delivery will resume, though there may still be delays as the postal service works through a backlog. It’s expected that some ticket volumes for November and December will be reported in January and February, so the full impact of the strike on ticket issuance remains unclear.
