Following torrential rain and record-setting flooding on Tuesday, numerous roads and over a dozen parks in Mississauga have been closed to the public. The heavy rainfall, which saw Pearson Airport record 97.41 mm over a three-and-a-half-hour period, led to significant flooding across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
Motorists and residents were caught off guard as highways, main roads, and local streets in Mississauga and Brampton quickly became inundated, leaving many drivers stranded until rescued by emergency responders or forced to abandon their vehicles.
Parks and trails were also affected as creeks and rivers overflowed, exacerbating the situation on already saturated ground. In one instance, a creek overflowed and flooded a nearby long-term care home in the city’s east end.
City officials cautioned residents about ongoing localized flooding and urged caution due to the current weather conditions. They noted that while the rain had ceased, it would take time for the floodwaters to recede.
City crews have been mobilized to address various issues, including flooded sidewalks, roads, parks, and trails, dislodged maintenance hole covers, and blocked catch basins. They are also assisting police with road closures across affected areas.
