The Masters Tape Ball Cricket League is the latest addition to Milton’s burgeoning cricket scene. Spearheaded by cricket enthusiasts Kazz Khan and Sunny Khan, the league launched its inaugural season on October 20 with a winter tournament hosted at the local Indoor Turf Centre.
Fourteen teams are competing for the title of champions in this new league. Since its inception, the league has outfitted teams with uniforms, secured over a dozen sponsors, and introduced a league trophy.
Making Cricket Accessible
Kazz Khan acknowledges cricket’s growing popularity but also notes that some formats, such as hardball cricket, can be intimidating due to their need for specialized equipment and advanced skills. Tape ball cricket, however, offers a more accessible alternative, requiring minimal equipment while still delivering excitement.
Traditionally an outdoor summer sport, cricket’s seasonal limitations inspired the Khans to provide a year-round opportunity for fans and players. “We wanted to give the community an opportunity to enjoy cricket with us,” said Kazz Khan. “This isn’t about financial gain or big prizes; it’s about keeping the community active in the winter.”
A Community Event
Billed as a family-friendly event, the Masters league invites everyone to join in the fun. “It’s an open invite. Bring your families, enjoy cricket, and play cricket. Everybody loves cricket here,” said the organizers.
The league has also drawn teams from outside Milton, including the GTA Godzillas, Toronto Reindeer, Signature XI, and OCC Cousins ‘N Neighbours. Matches take place every Sunday night from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. and will continue until February. A special highlight will be a Canada vs. U.S. matchup in January, featuring the Chicago-based CASO Cricket Club.
Growing Demand for Cricket Facilities
Cricket’s rising popularity in Milton has caught the attention of local officials. Ward 3 Councillor Adil Khalqi, who recently visited the Masters league, emphasized the need for expanded recreational facilities. Plans under review include cricket batting cages at Optimist Park and cricket provisions in the design of a new community center and district park near Bronte Road and Ethridge Avenue. Khalqi encouraged residents to share their input during the town’s budgeting process.
