Mississauga has become the latest city to announce it will stop flying the American flag amid the ongoing trade dispute between Canada and the U.S. and President Donald Trump’s threats of annexation.
Mayor Carolyn Parrish shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday that the city has started removing all American flags from locations along Lake Ontario and sports arenas “at the request of many residents.”
She also mentioned that oversized Canadian flags have been ordered to replace the U.S. flags on the poles at City Hall.
Parrish noted that many boaters visit the city’s Port Credit area during the summer, where U.S. flags had previously been displayed “to welcome our former good neighbors.”
She expressed regret, saying it’s “sad that one man and his group of enablers are disrupting the markets, distressing business owners on both sides of the border, and causing harm to such a mutually beneficial relationship.”
Earlier this month, the mayor of Barrie ordered the removal of U.S. flags from municipal buildings, including arenas, while West Lincoln Township council voted in February to do the same in their region.
