Property Owners Must Register to Ensure Compliance
Concerns over overcrowded rental units and rising safety risks have prompted Milton councillors to introduce stricter regulations for Additional Residential Units (ARUs). A new registry aims to bring order and enhance safety standards.
ARUs—commonly known as basement apartments, granny flats, or garden suites—are self-contained living spaces with a kitchen, sleeping area, and bathroom.
Starting today (April 1), property owners must register both new and existing ARUs for a one-time fee of $340 per unit.
The new regulations will establish an official ARU registry and improve property numbering, enabling Milton Fire and emergency services to respond more efficiently in case of an emergency.
Milton Fire Chief Peter Gatto emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating:
“The ARU registry and clearer property numbering will enhance emergency response capabilities for fire rescue services while ensuring occupant safety and compliance with municipal regulations.”
This initiative aligns with the Ontario Fire Marshal’s three pillars of safety: public education and prevention, fire code enforcement, and emergency response.
Bylaw and fire prevention officers will conduct inspections, educate property owners, and enforce key safety measures, such as interconnected smoke alarms, fire-rated doors, and sprinkler-protected heating areas.
Councillor Sameera Ali highlighted growing concerns over ARU misuse, saying:
“Many council members receive complaints about properties with three kitchens, 12 rooms, and 20 cars parked outside. This has become a major issue in Milton, and I hope this bylaw helps address it.”
