Assault-related crimes in Mississauga and Brampton have seen a significant rise since 2023, with police responding to over 300 incidents in the past month alone, raising concerns in the community.

From September 18 to October 19, Peel Regional Police reported 369 assault cases, averaging more than 11 incidents daily. Of these, 178 occurred in Mississauga and 191 in Brampton.
In the same timeframe last year, the number of assaults in both cities was notably higher, with 518 cases reported between September and October 2023.
The data also highlights two areas with multiple reported incidents this month:
– City Centre Drive: 5 incidents
– Queen Street: 5 incidents
The police report does not specify the types of assaults or the injuries sustained by victims.
Out of the 369 assault cases reported last month, investigators have solved 279, while 41 cases remain active and 49 are unsolved.
Here are some significant assault-related incidents reported recently:
– A Mississauga man faces charges for hate-motivated assaults and threats in Toronto.
– Another man was charged for two assaults in a park in Mississauga.
– Police are seeking a suspect in connection with two violent sexual assaults in Brampton.
– Charges of kidnapping and sexual assault were filed in relation to attacks that date back 20 years in both cities.
Peel Police have also provided important safety tips for residents:
– Don’t open the door to strangers; respond safely by speaking through a locked door.
– Plan your route and avoid shortcuts through vacant or poorly lit areas.
– Get to know the locations of nearby police stations and 24/7 stores.
– Try to avoid being alone; ask a friend to accompany you.
– Lock your car once you’re inside and don’t linger in parking lots—drive away promptly.
– If someone attempts to take your purse or bag, don’t resist. Instead, go to a safe place and call the police immediately. Only defend yourself if physically attacked.
– If you believe you’re being followed, avoid going home. Instead, head to the nearest police station or a public place.
