The 62-year-old farmer tragically lost his life following a trench collapse on a property along Guelph Line over the weekend. Emergency crews responded to the call Friday afternoon (April 18) after Anderson became trapped in a six-foot-deep trench. Although he was pulled from the site, he sadly succumbed to his injuries.
A lifelong farmer, Anderson was deeply connected to the land, taking great pride in his crops and livestock. Known for his humility and quiet demeanor, he let his actions speak louder than words, always ready to help others without hesitation.
“His generous spirit and kind heart touched many,” reads his obituary on the Wall-Custance Funeral Home and Chapel website. “Every connection Richard made was important to him.”
While soft-spoken, Anderson enjoyed talking about his hay customers and had deep respect for local horse and cattle farmers, whom he supported in various ways over the years.
In the wake of his passing, the farming community has rallied around his family, showing their support through visits, help with chores, and meals.
“We’re deeply grateful to all those who visited Richard’s mom, helped out at the farm, or brought food. Your kindness means so much to all of us,” reads a message from the family, which also extended thanks to first responders and victim services.
Visitation will be held at Wall-Custance Funeral Home (206 Norfolk St., Guelph) on Sunday, April 27, from 2 to 4 p.m., with the funeral service scheduled for Monday at 11 a.m. For those unable to attend in person, a livestream will be available on the funeral home’s website.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or another charity of your choice. A memorial tree will be planted in Anderson’s honor at the Wall-Custance Memorial Forest.
