Auto thefts remain prevalent in Mississauga and Brampton, with over 300 incidents reported to the police in the last 31 days.

Between February 22 and March 22, Peel Regional Police recorded a total of 336 vehicle thefts across both cities—194 in Mississauga and 142 in Brampton.

This averages to over 10 thefts per day in the region.

As of Saturday, eight stolen vehicle cases had been resolved, 298 are still under investigation, and 30 are classified as unsolved. Among the stolen vehicles, 261 are cars, 4 are motorcycles, 64 are trucks, and 7 fall into the “other” category.

The data also identifies the top eight hotspots for car thefts in Peel region this month:

Airport Road – 12 incidents

City Centre Drive – 20 incidents

Courtneypark Drive – 6 incidents

Dixie Road – 12 incidents

Dundas Street – 7 incidents

Great Lakes Drive – 7 incidents

Hurontario Street – 6 incidents

Lakeshore Road – 6 incidents

The information indicates that certain areas are more prone to theft, prompting residents to take additional precautions.

Compared to the same period last year (Feb.-March 2024), vehicle thefts in Mississauga and Brampton were significantly higher, with 646 incidents. These numbers continued to rise monthly, reaching a total of 6,657 car thefts by the end of 2024.

However, this month’s total of 336 auto thefts marks a decrease of approximately 13% compared to the 387 incidents reported from January 22 to February 22.

Peel police have provided the following tips to help prevent auto theft:

Whenever possible, park your vehicle in a locked garage, as most stolen vehicles were taken from driveways.

Use a steering wheel lock, which also serves as a visible deterrent.

Install a lock on the data port. This simple device blocks access to the port thieves use to reprogram vehicle keys and can be purchased online.

Consider investing in a quality video surveillance system. Ensure cameras are correctly positioned, functional for both day and night, and familiarize yourself with the system to quickly review footage.
