Fire crews were called to the same abandoned home in Mississauga twice over the weekend to battle separate blazes.
The first call came Friday evening after 6 p.m. in the Eglinton Avenue West and Mississauga Road area, followed by another call on Sunday around 11:30 p.m., according to a Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services spokesperson.
Both fires occurred at 1776 Thorny Brae Place, a vacant property. While no injuries were reported, the damage to the home is described as “pretty significant.”
Several homes in the area are slated for demolition, but the burned property did not have a demolition permit, the spokesperson noted.
A development plan for the area has been in progress for years, with a 37-unit townhouse project proposed in 2019 for properties at 1745, 1765, and 1775 Thorny Brae Place.
Evidence suggests the home may have been occupied by squatters, and fire officials are now working with the property owner to secure the property by installing fencing and boarding up the windows.
The home is considered unsafe to enter due to the damage. As of 10 a.m. Monday, fire crews remained on the scene for fire watch duties.
There is no update on the cause of the fire. The spokesperson also stated that, as of Monday morning, neither the police nor the Fire Marshal’s office were investigating the incident.
