A driver has been charged with multiple driving-related offences after crashing into the back of a transport truck on Highway 401 in Mississauga last week.
The collision, which happened on Feb. 13 along Highway 401 near Hurontario Street, left a white sedan heavily damaged.
It’s unknown how many occupants were in the vehicle at the time of the accident, however, police said no injuries were reported.
Photos posted to social media by the OPP on Sunday show the vehicle smashed against the back of a transport truck, with its roof nearly peeled away and side panels crumpled. The car’s front end appears wedged beneath the truck’s trailer, while the rear underride guard—designed to prevent vehicles from sliding underneath large trucks—seemingly prevented more catastrophic damage.
Police say the driver has been charged with careless driving and driving without a licence. The driver’s age, whether they are male or female and place of residence have not been released.
The incident sparked a wave of reactions online, with many people sharing their thoughts in the comments section.
“Driver is in for a financial wake-up call! No license = insurance = $5,000 fine,” one user wrote. “Now, if that car is financed or leased… you owe big time.”
Another user pointed to the wintry conditions across the GTA, noting, “That’s a scary kind of accident no matter how you look at it and very common in foggy and whiteout conditions! Drive safe, folks, like your life depended on it!
While police did not specify the exact charges against the driver, Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act outlines significant penalties for driving without a valid licence and for careless driving.
Careless driving fines range from $400 to $2,000, with the possibility of up to six months in jail, a licence suspension of up to two years and increased insurance rates. Drivers caught without a licence face a fine of $1,000 to $5,000 for a first offence, and between $2,000 and $5,000 for subsequent offences, with the possibility of six months in jail.
Drivers who forget their valid licence can be fined between $60 and $1,000. Driving with a suspended or expired licence carries penalties starting at $200, with repeat offences resulting in higher fines. Those found driving without ever having been licensed may face fines ranging from $200 to $1,000.
Police are continuing their investigation and have not provided additional details about the driver or the circumstances leading up to the crash.
