A national charity dedicated to improving literacy among Canadian adults is launching new resources to help people strengthen their everyday math skills.
In honor of International Day of Mathematics on March 14, ABC Life Literacy Canada is promoting its free numeracy program, ABC Everyday Numbers.
The organization says this initiative provides free workshops and learning materials to support adult learners in building math confidence. A new set of resources will be released at the end of March, offering additional support for those looking to improve their numeracy skills.
Numeracy, or math literacy, refers to the ability to apply basic mathematical concepts—such as addition and subtraction—to real-life situations.
“Math skills are essential for daily life, from budgeting and problem-solving to career advancement. Yet, many individuals struggle with numeracy, which can limit their educational and job opportunities,” the charity stated in a release.
According to the 2023 Survey of Adult Skills from the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), 51% of Canadian adults rank in the lowest three numeracy skill levels—down slightly from 54% in 2012.
Only 15% of adults score in the top two skill levels, while 34% fall into the mid-range, comparable to high school level math.
While numeracy rates have gradually improved over the past decade, ABC Life Literacy Canada says there is still room for growth and a need to prevent further decline.
“As the workforce shifts toward digital and automated roles, those without basic math skills may find it difficult to keep up,” said Alison Howard, Executive Director of ABC Life Literacy Canada.
“Confidence in numeracy enhances problem-solving abilities, informed decision-making, and adaptability to technology in the workplace. We are committed to providing free, accessible resources to help adults strengthen their math skills.”
Expanding Free Math Learning Resources
Currently, the ABC Everyday Numbers program offers four workbooks:
✅ Playing with Patterns
✅ Multiply Without Memorizing
✅ Estimating
✅ Understanding Rates
Each workbook is paired with an online course and video lessons to enhance learning.
By the end of March, the program will release a new workbook, online course, and video lesson focused on Probability.
These free resources are available to learners, educators, and community organizations.
How to Access the Program
