Excitement is building in downtown Milton as a new Portuguese restaurant, Terra Mar, prepares to open its doors in mid-May. The announcement, first shared by WildFlour Bakery on social media, has already stirred interest among food lovers and locals alike.
Named Terra Mar – meaning “land and sea” – the restaurant promises to deliver an authentic Portuguese dining experience, rooted in tradition and hospitality.
“It’s hearty, comforting food – the kind you’d have at grandma’s house,” says co-owner Ines Gomes.
Her husband and fellow co-owner, Fabio Rocha, adds, “It’s like stepping into a restaurant in Portugal – that’s the experience we want to give people.”
The idea for Terra Mar was sparked when Rocha noticed underused seating space at his other venture, WildFlour Bakery. Together with Gomes and partners Sandrina and Marinha Costa, he turned the vision into reality.
From the moment guests walk in, they’ll be transported. Blue and white wall tiles recall the charm of Mediterranean eateries, while a genuine Portuguese fishing net – once used by Gomes’ uncle – now hangs proudly by the bar, adding a personal touch of authenticity.
Seafood takes center stage on the menu, in true Portuguese fashion. Among the highlights is bacalhau (salt cod), a nostalgic favourite for Portuguese expats.
“We’ll also have octopus,” says Sandrina Costa. “It’s the one thing I always look for when I travel.”
Yet the menu goes beyond the sea. Traditional meat dishes, such as skewered meats served hanging from stands – a signature presentation in Portugal – will be brought to life with equipment imported directly from the country.
For dessert lovers, indulgent treats like baba de camelo, sericaia, and natas do céu (heavenly cream) await.
To round out the experience, Terra Mar will offer a curated selection of Portuguese wines, many of which can’t be found anywhere else in the region.
Set to open on May 15, the team behind Terra Mar hopes to offer a true celebration of Portuguese culture, cuisine, and community. A takeout menu is also in the works, for those who want to enjoy a taste of Portugal from the comfort of home.
