The RCMP has arrested a 21-year-old woman after 45 kilograms of marijuana were discovered hidden in her luggage at Pearson Airport, where she was attempting to board a flight to Germany.
The drugs, valued at $180,000, were found during a routine baggage inspection by the Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA) on October 25. The cannabis was seized, and the woman, identified as Renee Ashanta Henry, was charged with possession for the purpose of export under section 11(2) of the Cannabis Act.
Henry was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on December 5.
“Although cannabis is decriminalized in Canada, it remains illegal to transport any amount of cannabis on international flights, or amounts exceeding personal use limits on domestic flights,” said Inspector John McMath, Officer in Charge of the RCMP Toronto Airport Detachment. “This arrest underscores the serious consequences for those attempting to smuggle cannabis, including criminal drug smuggling charges.”
This arrest marks the second related to cannabis exportation within two days, following a similar case on October 25, when $250,000 worth of marijuana was found in luggage destined for England.
