One million sunflowers are currently blooming in Mississauga, and a special event is planned for this weekend.
Lakeview Community Partners Limited, the developer behind Lakeview Village, initially planted these sunflowers in 2019. Traditionally, the flowers began blooming in July, but this year’s display has been scheduled for September.
Lakeview Village is set to become a 16,000-home community featuring parkland and a prominent public pier.
The field adjacent to the developer’s Discovery Centre has been transformed into a sunflower display, complete with an outdoor art trail. The trail is lined with chairs and benches crafted by local sawmiller Sawmill Sid, who repurposes wood into beautiful pieces.
Once fully bloomed, the sunflowers usually remain vibrant for two to three weeks before wilting naturally. They will be re-planted for the next year’s display.
This weekend, the sunflowers will be celebrated at the Art Alfresco event on Saturday, September 7, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with a rain date scheduled for Sunday, September 8. In collaboration with the Mississauga Arts Council, seven local artists will paint the sunflowers and the surrounding landscape “en plein air” (outdoors).
The sunflowers can be seen behind the Discovery Centre, located at 985 Jim Tovey Blvd., off Lakeshore Road between Dixie and Cawthra Roads.
