Recently, the Heritage Advisory Committee of Mississauga proposed that the nearly 100-year-old St. John’s Baptist Anglican Church, situated at 719 Dundas Street East, be granted heritage status.
The committee’s evaluation highlighted the church’s neo-gothic architecture, rare in Peel Region, and emphasized its historical significance.
The church’s origins trace back to 1809 when the land was acquired for a place of worship and cemetery. A subsequent chapel and cemetery were constructed, though destroyed by fire in 1924.
The current stone church, completed in 1926, features neo-European design elements such as stained glass windows, pointed arches, pillars, and intricate decorations inside and out.
Notably, St. John’s Baptist Anglican Church is Ontario’s oldest union church still actively used today. As of now, there have been no updates regarding its potential heritage designation.
