Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) is investigating an increasing number of pickpocket incidents at Toronto Premium Outlets in Halton Hills, with over 100 cellphones reported lost or stolen since mid-November 2024.
Police have released security footage showing one of these thefts in action to raise awareness among shoppers. The video illustrates how thieves work in teams, often targeting individuals using their cell phones while shopping. One suspect bumps into the victim, snatches the phone from an unsecured pocket, and quickly hands it off to an accomplice. These thefts typically take only seconds to complete.
To help protect against such crimes, HRPS offers the following tips:
Secure your phone in a zipped or fastened inside jacket pocket or pouch when not in use.
Keep a tight grip on your phone in crowded areas.
Never leave your phone unattended.
Stay aware of your surroundings and people who may be watching or following you.
Keep your phone out of sight unless you need to use it.
If you witness suspicious activity or become a victim of theft, contact police immediately at 911 or call HRPS at 905-825-4777.
